1. A Bengali Anglophile Meets England at Fifty-Seven

   Nirad Chaudhuri, a Bengali writer who had absorbed English literature, history and painting for five decades without ever leaving India, spent a few weeks in England in 1955. He reported that very little surprised him: fields, towns, London streets and English manners largely matched the picture he had built from books. This makes his trip a documented test case of whether deep secondhand knowledge can anticipate direct experience of a place.

2. Landscape as Human Artifact, Not Nature

   Chaudhuri reads the English countryside as a cultivated work, shaped over centuries of hedging, farming and gardening into something close to an artwork. On this view, landscape expresses a people's accumulated character and care. How a nation keeps its land shows its temperament as clearly as its books or institutions.
