1. Jude St. Francis and Harold's adoption

   Jude, abandoned as an infant and raised by monks, is abused by them, by Brother Luke (a monk who takes him from the monastery), and later by Dr. Traylor; he becomes a celebrated litigator yet cuts himself for decades and long hides his past, eventually telling Willem. His law professor Harold adopts him as an adult and Willem later becomes his partner, but adoption, friendship, success and romantic love do not heal him. After Willem dies in a car crash, Jude kills himself at around fifty-three.

2. Self-harm as private regulation system

   Jude's cutting works as a self-administered tool he controls, taught to him in childhood as a way to discharge shame and emotion. Because it works in the short term and is his own, attempts by others to take it away register to him as a loss of control rather than as rescue, and this makes him resist and hide.

3. Jude's secrecy as the price of belonging

   Jude believes his friends' love depends on their not knowing his history, so for years he rations disclosure to protect those relationships, which keeps him isolated within them. His withholding reads as a strategy to stay loved rather than distrust, and it blocks intimacy until he confides in Willem and their closeness deepens.
