Patient testimony as symptom, not evidence
The book argues that a psychiatric patient's account of mistreatment cannot be taken at face value, because the suspicion, persecution feelings, and misreading of staff intentions it describes may themselves be products of the illness that required treatment. The patient's narrative is therefore recast as clinical material rather than eyewitness testimony.
