Buildings can contain 'gizmos' — large, manually operated kinetic devices like cranked walls, pivoting windows, and counterweighted shutters that let inhabitants physically move parts of the structure. The mechanism forces a tactile, deliberate engagement with the building, making the act of opening or closing become a ritual rather than a button-press.
Unfinished steel, concrete, and wood are chosen specifically because they weather, rust, and patina over time rather than being protected against decay. The argument is that visible aging records the building's history and ties it to natural processes, so material honesty is preferred over preservation of a pristine surface.
