The tao of Charlie Munger

  1. Buy wonderful businesses at fair prices

Munger pushed Buffett beyond cheap cigar-butt stocks toward high-quality companies with durable competitive moats bought at reasonable prices. A great business compounds value over decades, so quality outweighs a bargain purchase price.

  2. Temperament beats intelligence in investing

Munger holds that patience, discipline, and the ability to do nothing for long stretches matter more than raw IQ. The rare, decisive opportunity should be met with a large bet, while most of the time the right action is inaction.

  3. Incentives drive behavior more than anything

If you want to predict or change how people act, look first at what they are rewarded for. People will rationalize almost any conduct their incentives favor, often without knowing they are doing it. So flawed compensation or commission structures produce bad behavior from ordinary, decent people.

  4. Circle of competence and its boundary

An investor gains an edge by knowing exactly where the edge of their real understanding lies and declining everything outside it. How large the circle is matters less than knowing where it ends. Most errors come from acting just past that edge while believing you are inside it.

  5. Latticework of mental models across disciplines

Sound judgment comes from holding the big ideas of several fields, such as psychology, economics, biology, physics, and mathematics, and checking a problem against all of them. Someone with only one discipline's models distorts every problem to fit that model, like the man with a hammer who sees every problem as a nail.

  6. Invert: study how to guarantee failure

Instead of asking how to achieve a good outcome, ask what would reliably produce a bad one, then avoid those things. Many problems resist forward reasoning but become tractable backward, because it is easier to list the paths to ruin than to find the single path to success.
