Order in the world is built backward from the self: investigate things, extend knowledge, make intentions sincere, rectify the heart, cultivate the person, regulate the family, govern the state, then bring peace to the world. Each link depends on the one before it, so large-scale order is impossible without first ordering the smallest interior unit.
From the ruler down to the common person, self-cultivation is the single foundation on which everything else rests. When the root is in disorder, no well-ordered branches can grow — a corrupted self cannot produce a well-governed household or state.
Genuine knowledge is not given but extended by examining the actual things and affairs of the world. Only after one exhaustively investigates particulars does understanding become complete enough to act rightly.
Making intentions sincere means refusing to deceive oneself, like hating a bad smell or loving a beautiful sight — the response must be automatic and unfeigned. The cultivated person is therefore watchful when alone, because integrity is measured by what one does when unobserved.
When the mind is gripped by anger, fear, fondness, or anxiety, it loses its correctness and the person fails to perceive accurately — looking without seeing, eating without tasting. Rectifying the heart means clearing these emotional disturbances so that perception and judgment remain undistorted.
A ruler should treat virtue as the root and wealth as the branch; accumulating riches while neglecting character scatters the people, while accumulating virtue gathers them. Possessing the people yields territory, territory yields wealth, and wealth yields use — so moral character is the true engine of prosperity.
