The Four Agreements

  1. The Domestication of Human Belief

From childhood, humans are trained through a reward-and-punishment system to adopt beliefs they never chose, until they police their own behavior to match external agreements. This internalized authority — the Judge and the Victim — punishes us repeatedly for a single mistake using a 'Book of Law' we accepted without questioning.

  2. Be Impeccable With Your Word

Words carry the power to either create or destroy, so impeccability means using language only in the direction of truth and self-respect rather than against yourself or others. Gossip and self-criticism act like a 'spell' that spreads emotional poison, so withholding harmful speech breaks the chain of destructive belief.

  3. Nothing Others Do Is About You

Taking things personally is a form of selfishness because it assumes everything revolves around you, when in reality others act from their own conditioning and private reality. By refusing to take personal offense, you become immune to the opinions and actions of others and stop absorbing emotional poison that was never meant for you.
