The Extended Selfish Gene

Richard Dawkins

6 ideas

  1. The gene is the unit of selection

Dawkins argues that natural selection acts most fundamentally on genes, which persist across generations, rather than on individuals or groups that are transient. Organisms are temporary vehicles built by genes to propagate themselves.

  2. Organisms as survival machines

Bodies are 'survival machines' or vehicles that genes construct to protect and copy themselves. This reframes the animal as a means to the gene's end rather than the other way around.

  3. The extended phenotype

A gene's effects reach beyond the organism's body into the world it builds and manipulates, from beaver dams to parasite-altered host behavior. Phenotype should be defined by what a gene causes, not by skin boundaries.

  4. The meme as cultural replicator

Dawkins proposes the meme as a unit of cultural transmission that replicates and evolves by imitation, paralleling the gene. Ideas can spread by their own success at being copied, independent of benefit to their hosts.

  5. Apparent altruism serves gene interest

Behaviors that look selfless, like helping kin, are explained by copies of the same genes residing in relatives (kin selection). Altruism at the organism level can be selfishness at the gene level.

  6. We can rebel against our genes

Dawkins closes by insisting humans, uniquely, can foresee consequences and consciously defy the gene's short-term dictates. Biology explains our drives but does not have to command our ethics.
