  1. The Self as a Pattern of Attention

The self is not a fixed entity but the sum of contents that have entered consciousness — what we have paid attention to over a lifetime. Because psychic energy (attention) is a limited resource, how we invest it literally constructs who we become.

  2. Flow as Optimal Ordering of Consciousness

Flow occurs when a clear goal, immediate feedback, and a balance between challenge and skill fully absorb attention, producing a state where the self disappears into the activity. This experience builds psychological complexity because emerging from it leaves the self more skilled and differentiated than before.

  3. Complexity Joins Differentiation and Integration

A truly evolved self grows along two axes simultaneously: differentiation (developing unique skills, perspectives, and individuality) and integration (connecting to others, systems, and larger wholes). Pursuing only one produces either selfish isolation or conformist absorption; the goal is to become both more uniquely oneself and more deeply connected.

  4. Genes and Memes as Competing Masters

Much of what we want is dictated either by genetic instructions (seeking pleasure, status, reproduction) or by cultural memes (consumerism, ideology) that replicate using us as hosts. Freedom begins only when we recognize these inherited programs and consciously choose which to obey rather than serving them automatically.

  5. Transcending the Tyranny of the Selfish Gene

Evolution gave us pleasure as a reward for behaviors that aided survival, but these rewards now often misdirect us toward outcomes that no longer serve us or the planet. Conscious evolution means using the mind to override genetic and social manipulation, redirecting psychic energy toward goals we have actually examined and endorsed.

  6. The Transcender as Future-Oriented Self

A person living in harmony with evolution invests their attention in projects that increase the complexity of consciousness beyond their own lifespan and benefit the larger systems they belong to. Such people experience flow not from consumption but from contributing to the ongoing development of culture, knowledge, and the human community.
