  1. The Tetrapharmakos Anxiety Cure

Human suffering is dissolved by four propositions: the gods are not to be feared, death is nothing to us, what is good is easy to get, and what is terrible is easy to endure. Each removes a specific source of dread rather than promising positive gain, treating philosophy as medicine for the mind.

  2. Death Is Nothing To Us

Death involves no sensation, and all good and evil consist in sensation; therefore where death is, we are not, and where we are, death is not. Since the dead experience nothing, death cannot be bad for the one who dies, making the fear of it irrational.

  3. Pleasure As Absence Of Pain

The highest pleasure is not active stimulation but the removal of disturbance — freedom from bodily pain (aponia) and mental anxiety (ataraxia). Once pain is absent, pleasure cannot be increased, only varied, so the goal is a stable, neutral-positive state rather than escalating sensation.

  4. Classifying Desires By Necessity

Desires divide into natural and necessary (food, shelter, safety), natural but unnecessary (luxury versions of the same), and empty/vain (fame, wealth, power). Satisfying only the first category secures happiness cheaply, while the empty desires are unlimited and thus generate perpetual dissatisfaction.

  5. Prudence Over Pleasure-Maximizing

Choosing pleasure requires calculating future consequences: some pleasures lead to greater pain and some pains lead to greater pleasure, so we sometimes reject an immediate good or accept an immediate evil. The actual virtue at work is sober reasoning, which makes practical wisdom — not pleasure itself — the root of the good life.

  6. Friendship As Security Infrastructure

Friendship is prized not only for itself but because the confidence of having reliable allies removes a major source of fear about the future. The mere assurance of help — even help never actually called upon — produces tranquility, making relationships a structural component of a painless life.
