The Artist's Way

3 ideas

  1. Morning Pages as Mental Drainage

Write three pages of longhand, stream-of-consciousness text first thing every morning, with no editing, skill, or audience in mind. The point is not to produce art but to drain the surface anxieties, complaints, and self-criticism that block creative flow, clearing the channel before the day's censoring mind activates.

  2. Artist Date for Refilling the Well

Schedule a solo, weekly excursion to do something playful and sensory that delights your inner creative self, like visiting an aquarium or fabric store alone. Creativity draws from a reservoir of images and impressions that gets depleted by output, so deliberate solitary input restocks the well that work drains.

  3. The Censor as Internal Critic

Blocked creativity is largely the work of an internalized critical voice — 'the Censor' — that judges every fledgling idea as stupid or derivative before it can develop. Naming this voice as a distinct, automatic, and untrustworthy mechanism lets you separate it from your true judgment and proceed despite its objections.
