  1. Ten schools of strategy formation

Mintzberg and colleagues sort strategy thinking into ten schools (design, planning, positioning, entrepreneurial, cognitive, learning, power, cultural, environmental, configuration). Each captures part of the elephant; none sees the whole animal.

  2. Strategy emerges, it is not only planned

Realized strategy is a blend of deliberate intentions and patterns that emerge from action over time. Treating strategy as pure top-down planning ignores how it actually forms.

  3. The blind men and the elephant

Each school grasps one part of strategy and mistakes it for the whole, like the parable. Understanding requires holding multiple partial views at once rather than crowning one.

  4. Configuration as synthesis

The configuration school treats organizations as passing through stable states punctuated by transformation, integrating the other nine schools by context. Which school applies depends on where the firm is in its lifecycle.

  5. Analysis is not synthesis

Formal planning can break strategy into parts but cannot reassemble the creative leap that makes strategy work. Mintzberg argues strategy-making is closer to craft than to calculation.

  6. Prescriptive versus descriptive schools

Some schools tell firms how strategy should be made; others describe how it actually gets made. The book privileges description, arguing prescription untethered from reality misleads managers.
