  1. Slides Serve the Audience, Not the Speaker

Slides crammed with full sentences and bullet points exist as the speaker's notes, forcing the audience to read instead of listen and splitting their attention. A slide should be designed as a 'glance medium' the audience can absorb in three seconds, while the detailed content belongs in a separate document or in the speaker's spoken delivery.

  2. Treat Presentation Structure as Story Structure

A persuasive presentation moves the audience from their current reality ('what is') to a desired future ('what could be'), repeatedly contrasting the two to create tension that resolves at a final call to action. By identifying the audience's starting beliefs and the gap to where you want them, you build emotional momentum rather than a flat list of facts.

  3. Visual Hierarchy Through Contrast and Flow

The eye is directed across a slide by deliberate differences in size, color, weight, and position, so that the most important element stands out first and the rest follow in intended sequence. When everything is emphasized nothing is, so designers must subordinate secondary elements to establish a clear focal point and a path for the eye to travel.
