  1. Buddhism Versus Catholicism in Scaling

Scaling can proceed by replicating a fixed standardized template everywhere (Catholicism) or by spreading underlying mindsets and beliefs while letting local execution vary (Buddhism). Leaders must consciously choose where they sit on this spectrum, because over-standardizing kills local fit while under-standardizing dilutes the core into incoherence.

  2. The Problem of More

Scaling is not just doing more of the same; it is the work of spreading excellence to more people and places without it degrading along the way. The central challenge is preventing dilution as quantity increases, so each new unit carries the same quality as the original.

  3. Hot Causes And Cool Solutions

To spread excellence you must first ignite emotion that makes people care (a hot cause) and then give them a concrete, doable action that channels that emotion (a cool solution). Feeling without action fizzles, and action without feeling never gains momentum — both are required to drive behavior change at scale.

  4. Cutting Cognitive Load To Scale

Scaling adds complexity that overwhelms people's mental bandwidth, so leaders must actively subtract rules, steps, and options rather than only adding them. Removing the bad and unnecessary frees attention and energy that can be devoted to doing the few things that matter excellently.

  5. Accountability Through Felt Ownership

Excellence spreads when individuals feel that 'I own the place and the place owns me' — a mutual obligation where people act as if the whole organization's fate depends on them. This felt ownership, not surveillance or incentives alone, makes people enforce standards on each other and resist cutting corners.

  6. Connect People And Cascade Behavior

Scaling spreads through links between people more than through broadcast messages, because behaviors and beliefs travel along relationships and are imitated from trusted peers. Deliberately wiring connections between proven exemplars and newcomers cascades the right conduct faster than top-down mandates.
