People who 'fall through the cracks' of society become literally invisible to those still inside it — others' eyes slide past them, they cannot hail taxis, and clerks forget them mid-sentence. Social marginalization is modeled as a perceptual erasure, where losing your place in the ordinary world deletes you from its inhabitants' attention entirely.
