  1. Thought Begins in Spatial Action

Abstract cognition is built on the foundations of perceiving space and moving the body through it, not on disembodied symbol manipulation. The mind reuses the neural and conceptual machinery developed for navigating physical space to reason about time, relationships, and ideas.

  2. The Nine Laws of Cognition

Tversky proposes mental life follows regularities such as 'there are no benefits without costs,' 'action molds perception,' and 'cognition mirrors perception.' These laws frame the mind as a system that trades precision for usefulness and shapes thought to match how we act in the world.

  3. Gesture Is Thinking Made Visible

People gesture even when no one is watching because gestures help organize and offload thought, not just communicate it. Moving the hands externalizes spatial relationships, lightens cognitive load, and can generate new ideas the speaker hasn't yet put into words.

  4. Spatial Frameworks Around the Body

We organize the space around us using three body axes — head/feet, front/back, left/right — that differ in salience because of how the body is built and how gravity acts on it. Up/down and front/back are easier to reason about than left/right, which explains predictable errors in spatial memory and directions.

  5. Diagrams as Tools to Think With

External marks like maps, charts, and sketches don't merely record finished thoughts — they let us see spatial relations, spot patterns, and reason in ways working memory cannot sustain alone. Putting thought into the world on paper or screen lets the world do part of the cognitive work.

  6. Abstract Concepts Borrow Spatial Metaphors

We understand non-spatial domains by mapping them onto space: time runs along a line, importance is high, social closeness is physical proximity. These spatial metaphors are not decorative language but the actual structure we use to reason about abstractions.
