  1. Friction as the Defining Feature of War

War is dominated by friction — the countless small factors (fatigue, fear, weather, bad information, mechanical failure) that make even simple actions difficult and degrade plans in execution. Because friction cannot be eliminated, plans should be designed to be robust and adaptable under degradation rather than dependent on everything going right.

  2. Maneuver Warfare Targets Cohesion, Not Attrition

Rather than destroying the enemy piece by piece through superior firepower, maneuver warfare seeks to shatter the enemy's cohesion and will by attacking critical vulnerabilities faster than they can respond. The aim is to create a cascading sequence of dilemmas that paralyzes decision-making, so the system collapses before its parts are physically defeated.

  3. Commander's Intent Enables Decentralized Action

Subordinates are given the purpose and desired end state of an operation rather than detailed instructions, so they can act independently when the situation changes faster than orders can travel. This allows initiative at the lowest levels to remain aligned with overall goals even when communication breaks down or the original plan no longer fits reality.
