Capture every argument by recording four elements: the central Reason, its supporting Information, the logical Structure connecting them, and the Assessment of overall impact. Organizing notes this way lets you identify the load-bearing parts of an opponent's case and target rebuttals where they matter most rather than scattering responses.
Before rebutting, reconstruct your opponent's argument at its most persuasive—steelmanning rather than attacking a weakened caricature. Defeating the best possible version of a claim makes your refutation durable and signals to the audience that you are arguing in good faith.
Skilled arguers run a pre-check using whether the disagreement is Real, Important, and Specific, and whether the relationship can bear the cost—abbreviated as RISA for conversation triage. Many conflicts are better resolved by declining the argument entirely, because winning an unwinnable or trivial fight damages the relationship more than the point is worth.
