  1. Suffering Is the Default State of Life

Happiness is purely negative — it consists only in the temporary absence of pain or want, never a positive presence of its own. Because satisfaction merely removes a lack and immediately gives way to boredom or a new want, life oscillates between pain and tedium rather than progressing toward fulfillment.

  2. The Will as Restless Striving

The inner nature of all things is a blind, insatiable will to live that never reaches a final goal. Every attained desire only generates a new one, so the will produces endless craving that can never be permanently satisfied.

  3. Wealth as Seawater for Thirst

Possessions satisfy only the wants you actually have, not abstract greater wealth; the more you acquire, the more your expectations expand to match it. Like drinking seawater, increasing riches increases craving rather than quenching it, so contentment depends on limiting demands, not multiplying means.

  4. Health and Mood Govern Perception

The same external circumstances appear radically different depending on one's physical health and temperament, which color all experience like a tinted lens. Therefore cultivating cheerfulness and bodily well-being matters more to happiness than any external acquisition, since what we perceive depends chiefly on what we are.

  5. Boredom Reveals Life's Emptiness

When desire is momentarily satisfied and pain absent, boredom rushes in, exposing that existence has no positive content to sustain us. The frantic pursuit of distraction and society is a confession that being alone with oneself reveals nothing worth dwelling on.

  6. Solitude as the Price of Independence

Social ties require surrendering portions of one's own nature and submitting to mediocrity, so the more intellectually self-sufficient a person is, the less company benefits them. The wise person learns to tolerate solitude because freedom and individuality can only be preserved apart from the leveling pressure of crowds.
