Developer Joseph Eichler built thousands of modernist tract homes in postwar California, hiring serious architects to design for ordinary buyers. He proved good modern design could be mass-produced affordably.
The homes featured open plans, post-and-beam construction, floor-to-ceiling glass, and interior atriums that dissolved indoor-outdoor boundaries. These recurring features made a coherent, recognizable idiom of livable modernism.
