Does It Matter

Alan Watts

6 ideas

  1. The material-spiritual distinction is illusory

The split between matter and spirit dissolves under scrutiny because what we call 'material' is itself a pattern, a dance of energy with no solid substance underneath. Treating reality as either purely material or purely spiritual misses that both are abstractions imposed on a single seamless process.

  2. Money as measurement mistaken for wealth

Money is a system of bookkeeping, a way of measuring real wealth like food, energy, and labor, not wealth itself. Societies break down when they confuse the symbol for the reality, refusing to grow food or build because there is 'no money,' as if the menu were the meal.

  3. Self as activity, not entity

The 'self' is not a separate thing residing inside the body but a process the whole universe is doing, like a wave the ocean performs. Viewing yourself as a verb rather than a noun reveals that you and your environment are one inseparable field of action.

  4. Goal-obsession destroys present experience

Treating life as a journey toward a future destination empties the present of meaning, since the only moment that ever exists is now. A culture fixated on outcomes turns every activity into mere means, never arriving at the value it endlessly defers.

  5. Doing nothing as active intelligence

Wu-wei, or non-striving, means acting in accordance with the grain of things rather than forcing outcomes through willful effort. Many problems resolve themselves when one stops interfering, because compulsive activity often creates the very disturbances it tries to fix.

  6. Polarity replaces opposition between opposites

Apparent opposites — life and death, self and other, pleasure and pain — are not enemies but mutually defining poles of a single system, like the two ends of a magnet. Seeing them as polar rather than antagonistic removes the urge to eliminate one side, since each exists only by contrast with the other.
