Build a Better Business Book

  1. Define the Reader, the Problem, the Promise

Before writing, specify exactly who the reader is, what problem they have, and what transformation the book delivers — and reject any content that doesn't serve that triad. A book aimed at 'everyone' helps no one, so narrowing the target reader paradoxically increases the book's reach and sales.

  2. Books Sell Authority, Not Royalties

The financial return from a business book comes not from book sales but from the speaking fees, consulting contracts, and credibility the book unlocks. Authors should therefore optimize the book as a marketing asset for their business rather than as a standalone profit center.

  3. The Fat Smart Outline

Construct a detailed outline that includes not just chapter titles but the key points, examples, and arguments inside each chapter before drafting prose. This front-loads the hard thinking, exposes structural gaps early, and turns writing into the easier task of expanding pre-decided points.
