  1. Mental Availability Over Brand Attitude

Brand health is best measured by mental availability — the probability a brand comes to mind across buying situations — rather than by attitudinal loyalty or how much people claim to love the brand. The goal is being thought of by more buyers in more situations, not building deeper feelings in existing fans.

  2. Category Entry Points As Memory Cues

Category Entry Points (CEPs) are the cues buyers use to access their memory when a buying situation arises — needs, occasions, locations, emotions, and companions. A brand's mental availability is built by linking the brand to as many relevant CEPs as possible, so it gets retrieved in more buying moments.

  3. Network Size And Quality Metrics

Measure mental availability with two complementary metrics: Mental Market Share (the brand's share of all CEP links across the category) and Mental Penetration (how many buyers hold any link to the brand). These reveal whether a brand needs to reach more people or build more associations among the people it already reaches.

  4. Big Brands Win By Being Thought Of More

Larger brands aren't loved more deeply per buyer; they are simply linked to more category entry points and retrieved by more people more often. Brand growth comes from expanding the breadth of this memory network, not from intensifying loyalty among a small core.

  5. Buyers, Not Just Brand Lovers

Light and non-buyers matter more to brand health than heavy loyal buyers, because they represent the untapped growth and the larger share of the market. Measuring only the views of engaged customers systematically overstates a brand's health and hides where decline is happening.

  6. Diagnosing Decline Before Sales Fall

Mental availability metrics act as early-warning indicators: erosion in CEP links or mental penetration appears before it shows up in sales figures. Tracking these leading indicators lets marketers intervene while the brand's memory structures can still be rebuilt, rather than reacting after revenue drops.
